Note: The following only applies to vehicles with diesel engines (TDI engines).  Volkswagen manufactures many cars that do not have diesel engines and if you own one of these non-diesel cars (gas, hybrid, electric), this scandal does not directly affect you. 

For years Volkswagen has been marketing their “clean diesel” vehicles (TDI models) to Americans just like you. The thing is, there was nothing “clean” about these diesel cars and they actually emitted up to 40x the level permitted by the State of California. More shockingly, VW has admitted that they purposely installed software that tricked emissions testers into certifying their diesel vehicles.  Approximately 68,000 of these vehicles were sold in California alone.  Each of these VW TDIs are now in a non-compliant state (they cannot pass emissions testing) and as such cannot be registered without software and/or hardware modifications.  Further, the value of these cars have taken a substantial hit due to the inability to register them and the vehicle’s inability to preform as advertised (gas-mileage and performance).

What Did Volkswagen Do?

In late September, 2015 the U.S Environmental Protection Agency ordered VolksWagen to recall nearly 500,000 cars they sold in the United States after they were caught having installed software in the vehicles that were activated only when the software detected that the vehicle was undergoing emissions testing. When the vehicle was not undergoing emissions testing, the software was deactivated so that the vehicle exhibited better performance and gas mileage. How Does Volkswagen’s Fraud Affect Me?

In addition to being deceived by Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer, your car is now unable to pass emissions/smog testing. As a result it cannot be legally registered in CA. Additionally, your car has taken a huge hit in value because you cannot re-sell it. Your car also needs to be repaired/replaced.
